CARDIAC MUSCLE | RHYTHM OF LIFE | Medicoze

This is found in the heart. It consists of short, branched cylindrical fibres joined end to end. The adherent ends of adjacent fibres form dark intercalated discs. Each fibre contains a single central nucleus and striated myofibrils resembling those of voluntary muscle. It is supplied by the autonomic nervous system, but heart muscle also has the properties of spontaneous and rhythmic activity. The conducting system of the heart is made up of modified cardiac muscle cells.
